Diocese of Sourozh Jubilee Congress

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Diocese of Sourozh. A central part of the programme of celebrations of this important landmark in the life of our diocese will be the Diocesan Jubilee Congress, which will combine the summer meeting of the Diocesan Assembly with the annual residential weekend (the Diocesan Conference). This annual meeting provides a unique opportunity for people from around the diocese to gather in fellowship, prayer and discourse.

The keynote theme of the congress will be Councils and Conciliarity. The speakers will also develop the theme of the conciliar nature of the Church as reflected in the interdependence of clergy and laity and the worshipping community as the context for the development of the spiritual life of the human person.

Сурожская епархия Русской Православной Церкви в Великобритании и Ирландии отмечает свое 50-летие.
Центральным событием праздничных мероприятий, посвященных 50-летию Сурожской епархии станет епархиальный юбилейный конгресс, в программу которого войдут Летнее заседание Епархиального собрания и ежегодная Епархиальная конференция.

As always, our common prayer in the services will be at the heart of the gathering.The main talks will include:

Archbishop Elisey of Sourozh: The Diocese of Sourozh, Past, Present and Future

- Archbishop Mark of Egorievsk: Councils and Conciliarity
- Archpriest Stephen Platt: Clergy and laity
- Priest Andrew Louth: Community and Person

Simultaneous translation (English­-Russian or Russian-English as appropriate) will be provided for the main talks.
There will be a choice of workshops on Saturday afternoon.

В этом году для дискуссии выбрана тема "Собор и Соборность". Выступающие будет говорить о соборной природе Церкви как инструменте взаимодействия духовенства и мирян, а также о евхаристическом общении как основе развития духовной жизни человека.

Основные доклады Конференции (с синхронным переводом):
- "Настоящее, прошлое и будущее Сурожской епархии" (Архиепископ Сурожский Елисей;
- "Духовенство и миряне" (Протоиерей Стефан Платт);
- "Общество и человек" (Священник Эндрю Лаут).

9 июня для гостей и участников Конгресса будут проведены различные семинары.

Торжественное открытие Конгресса состоится 8 июня в 17:00.

The Diocesan Jubilee Congress, dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the Diocese of Sourozh, took place from 8th to 10th June 2012.
The Congress aimed to reflect on the historical heritage of the Diocese of Sourozh, consider the problems it faces at present, and discuss its future development.
With the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, the jubilee event was attended by Archbishop Mark of Egorievsk, Head of the Moscow Patriarchate’s Administration of Institutions Abroad. Clergy and lay people, representatives of the parishes and communities of the Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church in the UK and Ireland took part in the Congress.

The theme of the Jubilee Congress was ‘Councils and Conciliarity’. Conciliarity, as an assembly of believers around Christ, present in the Eucharist, unites the Diocese of Sourozh, originally inspired by preaching and personal example of its first ruling bishop Metropolitan Anthony (Bloom)

The participants of the Congress marked in their talks that the desire to remain faithful to the Mother-Church has always been characteristic of the members of the Diocese, who, at the same time, welcome everyone wishing to become Orthodox.

In spite of difficulties the Diocese of Sourozh experienced in the past, normal Diocesan life has now been restored and the structure of the Diocese organised. The number of parishes and communities is increasing together with the number of clergy and parishioners, and diocesan activity is expanding.

Archbishop Mark of Egorievsk, Priest Andrew Louth, and Archpriest Steven Platt presented reports on ‘Councils and Conciliarity’, 'Community and person', and 'Clergy and laity'. Archpriest Maxim Nikolsky talked about the history of the Diocese of Sourozh. Archbishop Elisey of Sourozh presented the jubilee address 'Diocese of Sourozh: past, present and future’.

The participants of the Congress watched a trailer of the film about the Diocese of Sourozh, prepared for the Jubilee of the Diocese and attended workshops on various actual problems. Children had their own programme.

Every day the participants of the Congress gathered for common church prayer culminating with the Divine Liturgy celebrated by Archbishops Mark of Egorievsk, Elisey of Sourozh, and Anatoly of Kerch, together with the clergy of the diocese.
